Sonneman — A Way of Light
Bauhaus Modernism, Made for Today's American Home
Robert Sonneman was nineteen years old, fresh from the U.S. Navy, when he answered an ad to be the sole employee of a small Madison Avenue shop importing European modern lighting. The year was 1961. His boss, George Kovacs, introduced him to the principles of the Bauhaus — the idea that an object's form should follow its function, that minimalism is its own kind of beauty, that Mies van der Rohe was right when he said less is more. The young man was captivated. Six years later, in 1967, at age 22, Robert Sonneman opened his own factory and began making lighting unlike anything America had seen — clean-lined, machine-precise, philosophically rigorous, deliberately stripped of ornament. Today, his work sits in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and his company — SONNEMAN — A Way of Light — is one of the most respected modern lighting brands in the United States.
We carry the line at European Kitchen & BathWorks because, in an industry full of decorative ornament and historical pastiche, Sonneman is genuinely doing something different — and the right home shows it off beautifully.
Why It Matters in Your Home. Sonneman's design philosophy can be summarized in a single Robert Sonneman quote: "Light shapes space, determines perception, and sets the mood and tone of an environment." The brand's fixtures are designed first as architectural elements, second as decoration. They illuminate cleanly, with 95% LED technology, in geometries that read as quietly contemporary rather than stylistically of-the-moment. They scale — sometimes infinitely — to fit large rooms, high ceilings, double-height entries, and open-plan kitchens that nothing else in the market can solve. They look genuinely modern, and they will continue to look genuinely modern in twenty years.
Iconic Modular Systems. Sonneman's most recognized collections are modular, meaning they can be configured to any size, shape, or composition you can imagine. Suspenders® — the brand's signature — connects power bars, hangers, and luminaires into virtually limitless configurations for dining rooms, conference tables, kitchen islands, and grand foyers. Constellation® clusters LED elements into interconnected celestial compositions that scale to any room. Stix® brings drama and volume through configurable LED rods. Intervals, Purolinear 360, Ola, Yo, Tik-Tak, ALC, and Cubix continue that modular language across more than one thousand individual fixtures.
Recent Releases. The new QB collection translates a timeless geometric cube into ADA-compliant, IP65-rated fixtures perfect for luxury bathrooms, living spaces, and protected outdoor environments. The new LP wall-mount creates a refined halo of indirect ambient light. Both are available in Textured Black, Textured White, and Natural Anodized finishes — bringing Sonneman's minimal vocabulary into the most architecturally demanding contemporary homes.
